A survey is prepared by a licensed surveyor, and it shows and marks exactly where the property is that you are purchasing. In a real estate contract this is very important. You can choose to get one. You can choose not to get one. You can choose as a buyer to pay for it yourself or negotiate for the seller to do it or split the cost. But it's very handy, especially if you plan on doing any improvements to a property, to know exactly what you're buying when you are purchasing it. From my experience, a survey is important because when people get in trouble after a sale, it tends to be that they think that they bought something that they actually didn't. And that survey helps clarify all those issues.
